Ship Simulator Extremes é um jogo, como o próprio nome diz, de simulação e controle de navios. Nele, o jogador assume o papel de comandante de enormes embarcações, como petroleiros, barcos de resgate, transatlânticos, navios de cruzeiro... Até mesmo o Titanic pode ser conduzido na tentativa de mudar a história e evitar o fatídico iceberg.
Algumas liberdades são tomadas com relação aos controles mais complexos, e menos divertidos, para que seja possível que um jogador sem prévia experiência naval controle uma destas embarcações. O que não significa que será fácil, já que é necessário realizar diversas tarefas além de controlar a movimentação do barco.
Um exemplo disso é quando o jogo manda o jogador sair da cabine de comando e baixar botes salva-vidas; ou então atirar com um canhão de água nos caçadores ilegais de baleias. Esta última actividade, inclusive, denota o apoio do Greenpeace ao título, algo representado de várias formas — incluindo a existência de barcos da instituição à disposição do jogador.
Se já tiveram oportunidade de ver os últimos vídeos de Just Cause 2, sabem que este jogo é a mais pura das diversões e baseia-se na destruição total de tudo que nos aparece à frente. As mais impressionantes acrobacias podem ser executas da forma mais simples possível, como saltar de um avião e voltar a entrar nele em plena queda livre, sair de um carro em andamento e abrir instantaneamente o pára-quedas ou até mesmo viajar em cima de um avião a jacto sem cair. The player character has robbed the Liberty City Bank with his girlfriend, Catalina, and a male accomplice. While running from the scene, Catalina turns to him and utters, "Sorry, babe, I'm an ambitious girl and you ... you're just small-time". She shoots him and leaves him to die in an alley; the accomplice is also seen lying nearby. It soon becomes apparent that the player character has survived but has been arrested and subsequently found guilty and sentenced to jail. While he is being transferred, an attack on the police convoy aimed at kidnapping an unrelated prisoner sets him free.
